The global polyester market has experienced significant growth due to polyester’s versatility in textiles, home furnishings, and industrial applications. Today, polyester constitutes over 52% of the total fiber market, making it the most widely used fiber worldwide. Recently, the push for sustainability has elevated the demand for recycled polyester (rPET). This shift is evident as more brands commit to using recycled materials, creating robust market opportunities for rPET.
Fashion Brands’ Commitments of Recycled Polyester ( (Against replacement of Virgin Polyester)
Fashion brands are setting ambitious sustainability goals, aiming to integrate recycled materials across their product lines. Prominent brands, such as Adidas and Nike, have pledged to achieve substantial recycled polyester use by 2025. These initiatives cater to the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products and allow brands to reduce their carbon footprint. In Bangladesh, garment manufacturers are beginning to align with these global trends, acknowledging the importance of adopting recycled polyester (rPET) in their production processes.
Bangladesh’s polyester recycling industry is still evolving. Although the country is a global leader in garment exports and consumes vast amounts of polyester, most of this consumption is still focused on virgin polyester due to cost and availability advantages. However, awareness of global sustainability trends is growing, and the industry is beginning to shift toward recycled polyester (rPET) solutions.
The domestic industry includes a few manufacturers of recycled polyester staple fiber (PSF), but there are currently no local producers of recycled polyester filament yarn from post-consumer PET bottles.
