Major breakthrough in domestically produced high-end aramid fiber! 5,000 tons of high-strength/high-modulus PPTA fiber achieved in domestic mass production

Project Research Background

On October 17, 2025, the China National Textile and Apparel Council convened a scientific and technological achievement appraisal meeting in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, for the project "Key Technologies for Green Preparation of High-Strength/High-Modulus Para-Aramid," jointly completed by Sinochem High-Performance Fiber Materials Co., Ltd. and Donghua University. The appraisal committee concluded that the project's achievements reached the international advanced level. A brief introduction to the project's research results is as follows:

High-performance para-aramid (PPTA) is a key strategic material in my country, possessing both military and economic value. It is widely used in aerospace, military, bulletproof protection, and other fields, making it an important dual-use material. As of 2025, its global market demand reached 120,000 tons, with an annual growth rate exceeding 9%. my country's military and high-end manufacturing sectors require nearly 10,000 tons of high-strength products annually. Since the industrialization of PPTA fibers in 1972, DuPont (USA) and Teijin (Japan) have maintained an absolute advantage in high-end manufacturing and downstream applications due to their technological accumulation. As of 2024, their production capacity accounted for 40% and 35% of the world's total capacity, respectively, with high-strength/high-modulus products holding a significant market share. Although domestic enterprises have made significant progress in PPTA manufacturing technology and industrial development under policy support, poor batch stability, small scale, and weak differentiation and downstream application technologies make it difficult to meet high-end demands. Therefore, the development of high-end PPTA fiber industrialization technology is urgently needed. To meet the needs of major national projects, accelerate the development of my country's high-performance fiber industry, and fill the gap in domestic high-performance fiber technology, Sinochem High-Performance Fiber Materials Co., Ltd. has established a production line with independent intellectual property rights capable of producing 5,000 tons of high-strength/high-modulus aramid fiber annually. This aims to promote the high-quality and stable development of my country's high-end PPTA fiber, differentiated products, and downstream industries, thereby enhancing international competitiveness. The project breaks through the "bottleneck" of large-scale stable production technology for high-strength/high-modulus PPTA fiber in my country, achieving the localization of key equipment across the entire industry chain.

Key Innovations of the Project

The project developed a low-temperature solution polycondensation high-capacity reactor process control technology, achieving stable preparation of high molecular weight narrow-distribution PPTA; it overcame the rapid and efficient dissolution technology of high molecular weight para-aramid polymers, improving the uniformity of PPTA fiber production in industrial applications; it developed high-modulus para-aramid liquid crystal spinning and low-strength-loss high-modulus heat treatment technology, as well as high-strength para-aramid liquid crystal spinning technology for finer denier monofilaments. The initial modulus of the high-modulus 1500D product reached 837 cN/dtex, and the breaking strength of the high-strength 1000D product reached 24 cN/dtex; it also established a calcium chloride recycling technology for the polymerization process, and the recovered calcium chloride solution can meet the requirements of the polymerization process.

Project industrialization and application status

The project has established a capacity of 5,000 tons/year of high-strength/high-modulus PPTA fiber and entered the industrial operation stage. Polymerization and spinning are seamlessly integrated, achieving full production capacity and efficiency. Product quality and stability have steadily improved, and performance meets the demands of the high-end market. Currently, it is supplying the market with various specifications of high-strength and high-modulus fiber products. It stably supplies a wide range of application areas, including bulletproof protection, the automotive industry, industrial equipment, and aramid composite materials, and has gained high market recognition, successfully entering the supply chains of major leading enterprises.
